CARA Visiting Fellow
GCRF Research for Health in Conflict (R4HC-MENA), Reproductive Health among Youth in Conflict settings, Yemen (R2HC)
Dr Bothaina Attal joined the Centre for Business Research as a CARA Visiting Fellow in 2020, and is Associate Professor of Public Health at Sana’a University, Yemen. She is a medical doctor holding a PhD in Public Health from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, UK.
She has over 10-years public health experience in teaching, multi-disciplinary research and programme management in Yemen and in a number of Arab countries. She worked at WHO and UNICEF, Yemen, in establishing and managing reproductive health and gender programmes. In UNICEF, Dr Attal oversaw the piloting of the community-based Reproductive Health and Child Health programme in hard-to-reach populations in several governorates in the country. Dr Attal supported setting up reproductive health services in conflict-affected areas in Yemen through developing humanitarian fund appeals, and planning and implementing of health projects.
In her work as an academic and a freelance consultant, Bothaina participated as a principal and a co-investigator of multi-disciplinary and muti-institutional research projects in reproductive health, gender issues and health systems. In the current research project, she is looking at the political and economic factors shaping the health system in Yemen as part of the multi-country study in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The findings of the Yemen case study are aimed to inform strengthening the health system and its transition from an emergency response mode to a development stage.
