Research topic
The Allocation of Resources at the Corporate Level in Multi-Business Firms
Biography
Niklas is a fourth-year doctoral candidate in the area of strategic management. His research is focused on the topic of how firms allocate resources among their different areas of business.
As a basis for his doctoral work, Niklas completed a research masters at the University of Cambridge, where he finished top of class. Prior to embarking on this academic journey, he gained three years of industry experience at the management consulting firms McKinsey & Company, as well as at the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), in Munich and Düsseldorf, Germany.
In his free time, Niklas is passionate about regional Bavarian football and modern art. He enjoys going for bike rides and going for a run to refresh his mind.
Research interests
Corporate strategy; resource allocation; resource redeployment; strategic renewal.
The major goal of Niklas’ research is to obtain a deeper understanding of how organisations allocate resources among different strategic business units (SBUs). He believes it is important to study this topic because resource allocation allows firms to renew themselves over time and innovate successfully, thereby allowing them to stay competitive in the long run. Despite this importance, it appears that large numbers of firms are struggling with allocating resources in a way that allows them to adapt well to changing market conditions. This struggle of organisations calls for the development of new theoretical models to better understand the allocation of resources.
In order to answer his research questions, Niklas typically employs econometric methods. He is also trained in using interpretative qualitative research approaches.
