                                                Creating Value:
            how universities help boost business competitiveness

A research seminar on how universities help boost business competitiveness was organised by the Centre for Business Research (CBR) and the Council for Industry and Higher Education (CIHE) and was held on 27th May 2008 at Microsoft's headquarters in London. This seminar was an invitation only event. The research and findings were discussed in presentations in response to the report by Dr David Evans, the Director of Innovation at DIUS, Professor Philip Esler, the CEO of the Arts and Humanities Research Council, and Dr Cathy Garner, Chief Executive of Manchester: Knowledge Capital.

Key issues addressed:

  • the process through which businesses identifies opportunities to work with universities
  • how companies realise value from such interaction
  • the range of different models of engagement
Emerging issues discussed:
  • how to assess the economic and social impact of university-business interactions
  • how to facilitate university-business interactions
  • the role of location and proximity
  • implications for the public policy and funding and research councils

Report on the research findings:

The CBR research will be published in a new report, University-Business Links in the UK: boundary spanning, gatekeepers and the process of knowledge exchange. It was undertaken by Maria Abreu (CBR), Vadim Grinevich (CBR), Alan Hughes (CBR and Judge Business School) and Michael Kitson (Judge Business School). It was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and conducted in collaboration with Philip Ternouth of the Council for Industry and Higher Education (CIHE).
